Howdy, y’all! We’ve got 50 days until the election!
You know what that means?
It means, it’s time to get a little boring.
I promise I won’t do this every day, but I will be throwing some state-specific
Down ballot tips your way.
With all the hype about the Presidential election,
It’s easy to forget how critical the rest of your ballot is.
In case you aren’t glued to podcasts and YouTube channels
Like Strict Scrutiny, Hysteria, and Democracy Docket,
Know that I am, and today I’ll be your guide
Through the perilous lands of North Carolina and Texas.
I’m meeting with friends today to write hundreds of postcards to voters in these two states.
And I want to have more than “Vote Kamala Harris” as a topic.
You’ve heard of her by now.
Here are some things you might not have heard of…
North Carolina has 14 state lawmakers up for reelection
With a deep history of election denialism.
There’s been some redistricting nonsense going on in
North Carolina, so be sure to find your district and vote Blue to
Get these election deniers out of office.
North Carolina has partisan judges, which most voters DO NOT support.
The “conservative” (read: MAGA) majorities on North Carolina’s Supreme Court
Are not in line with the will of their constituents.
Vote Allison Riggs, to maintain at least one progressive seat on the court!
North Carolina has some state constitutional shenanigans going on as well.
They want to amend their constitution to keep naturalized citizens from voting.
It is already illegal for non-citizens to vote, but by phrasing this measure:
North Carolina Citizenship Requirement for Voting Amendment (2024)
It makes it seem like sure, why not? People could vote for this, not realizing they may be voting against their own ability to vote in future elections!
This is a VERY misleading measure. It’s based on that racist bucket of stale vomit known as “great replacement theory” and its goal is to eliminate voting rights for anyone not born in the United States. You must be a citizen to vote, but you can become a citizen without being born here. See what they did there? This is racist, MAGAt shit and North Carolinians should vote NO on this absolute fuckery.
Do not be fooled by their bullshit. Vote this shit down!!
Texans! Please, please, please get Ted Fucking Cruz out of the Senate!
Remember how he tried to flee to Mexico with his family when your power grid failed and everyone was freezing their asses off?
For fuck’s sake, vote Collin Allred for Senate!!
District and state supreme court justice elections are hugely impactful
Not just to the residents of the states, but to all Americans.
Texas has some of the most problematic courts in the country and has directly influenced how corrupt our US Supreme Court is, by essentially getting cases sent up to SCOTUS, not because they should be or need to be, but so that SCOTUS can make even more harmful legislation we are all forced to live under.
The Texas Attorney General is a completely Shit-tastic Racist Pile of Poop, literally raiding people’s homes on bogus claims of voter fraud. While impeaching the AG sadly failed, you can elect some less MAGAT-y judges.
Some names that may appear on your ballot (depending on your address) for your State Supreme Court and Court of Appeals: Holly Taylor, DaSean Jones (Harris County), Christine Weems (Harris County), Bonnie Lee Goldstein (Dallas County), Nancy Mulder (Dallas County), Chika Anyiam (Dallas County)
If you are unsure how to vote on any given measure, or candidate, a quick google search is a few clicks away. Google “Progressive Voter Guide Your State” to help narrow your search. You can also check out aclu.org/vote and click on the stickers for items you care about that can help lead you to being a more informed voter.
This may be the last borderline free-and-fair election we ever have, so make it count.
